The UIA is endorsing the 2019 UIA-CBC International Colleges and Universities Competitive Construction Workshop. Created in 2016, previous editions have been successfully organised in China and acquired recognition at national and international level. The UIA has chosen to support the Workshop for the first time in 2019 and invites architecture students from all over the world to submit their designs.
The Workshop is organised by the Siyang County People’s Government, CBC (China Building Centre) and the School of Architecture, Tianjin University. The theme of this year’s edition is “Pear Orchard Cabins”.
The Workshop takes place in a pear orchard in Guoyan Village in Siyang County, China. It is in urgent need of revitalisation as the village faces the consequences of industrial development.
The participants will work in joint teams (each team will have students from an institution in mainland China paired with students from an institution from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and abroad). They will use a limited space to design and construct their cabins with a view to improving the quality of living in the village. They will also design the infrastructure connecting the whole community. The goal is to revitalise the century-old pear orchard and explore a path for changing villages through the power of design.
The competition consists of two stages with two rounds of corresponding review.
Design stage: the teams submit their designs to the jury for review. The jury selects 15 joint teams.
Construction stage: the 15 selected joint teams will implement the on-site construction. The jury will review the final built work and select the winners.
